ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 AS6704T Home and Small Office NAS

Recently I purchased ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 AS6704T with Intel Quad-Core Celeron CPU and 4GB DDR4 RAM. There a couple of USB 3.2 ports, 2 Ethernet ports, HDMI, 4 trays for 3.5 inch HDD and M.2 slots for up to 4 NMVe SSD. My unit came with 4 Western Digital Ultrastar 2TB HDDs. I made a video review featuring unboxing, tech specs, hardware upgrade with NMVe SSD for caching purposes, software setup with Asustor Data Master (ADM) Linux distribution, Docker, Portainer.io, X11, Firefox, Transmission, Plex and Kodi. Hopefully this relatively quick video will help you decide whether to buy or not such NAS (Network Attached Storage).

ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 comes with a Asustor Data Master (ADM). This is an embedded Linux distribution with proprietary Asustor applications and a lot of open source components such a Linux kernel, X11, Firefox, Docker and Portainer.io. Some of the top apps are Plex and Transmission. It is also possible to manually install software and there is a community supported version of Kodi. These are some of the most interesting software solutions running on this Asustor NAS:

🚢 Docker is a platform to build, ship, and run applications in isolated environments known as containers. These containers package software and its dependencies into a standardized unit that can run on any system, regardless of its underlying infrastructure. Docker simplifies the deployment process by providing a consistent environment from development to production, allowing for seamless scaling and efficient resource utilization. Docker Community Edition (CE) is available for download and installation from App Central on ADM (Asustor Data Master).

🔧 Portainer.io is an open-source management tool for Docker, designed to simplify the deployment and management of Docker containers and clusters. It offers a user-friendly interface that allows users to visualize, manage, and monitor Docker environments with ease. With Portainer, users can create and manage containers, images, networks, and volumes through an intuitive web-based dashboard, eliminating the need for complex command-line interactions. Just like Docker, Portainer.io is also available for download and installation from App Central on ADM (Asustor Data Master).

📺 Kodi is a free and open-source media player software application. Kodi allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet. It provides a customizable interface with various skins and plugins, allowing users to personalize their media playback experience. Additionally, Kodi supports a wide range of audio and video formats, making it a versatile solution for home entertainment systems. The installation ADM is a bit tricky. Patrick from the Asustor forum has shared an APK for Kodi 18.9 which has to be installed manually through the ADM (Asustor Data Master).

📚 Plex is a media server software that allows users to organize, stream, and access their media files, including movies, TV shows, music, and photos, across various devices. It is one of the top apps from App Central on ADM (Asustor Data Master).
